AI Data Center Executive Order Would be a Shameful End to the Biden Administration

Possible Executive Order Follows White House Meeting with Big Tech and Energy Executives

Washington, DC — On Wednesday, Politico reported that President Biden is considering executive action to fast-track the construction of gigantic, power and water-sucking data centers used to power AI companies. Earlier this year, the Biden White House met exclusively with big tech and energy company executives to discuss data center construction. In October, Demand Progress Education Fund led a coalition demanding that the White House also hear from environmental, consumer advocate and civil society groups about the harms of building destructive data centers to power unproven AI.

The following is a statement from Emily Peterson-Cassin, Director of Corporate Power at Demand Progress Education Fund:

“Signing away our water and power to Big Tech gamblers betting everything on unproven AI would be a foolish and shameful coda to the Biden administration. AI companies are flooding our search results and social media feeds with false, unusable garbage and are desperately trying to force biased, unreliable algorithms into every aspect of our lives–including hiring, health care and even national security.

President Biden should know not to entrust these tech giants with our economic and environmental future, especially since his own administration is suing many of them for antitrust violations. During his last few weeks in power, the president should be prioritizing the welfare of American communities, not Big Tech and Dirty Energy execs looking to line their pockets.”
